The star behind the outstanding EP, Infatuated, recently dropped another hit for world – “Damelo”. The Ukraine-born star moved to America with his family as a child and used music as a means to develop his English skills but messed around and created an affinity with music that is coming to fruition to the world now.
By the age of 10 he was idolizing superstars he saw as “larger than life characters”, such as Boyz II Men, TLC and Mariah Carey, just to garner a little bit of their vibe which is more than apparent with his vocal presence. And of course, he was a huge fan of the GOAT Michael Jackson calling him the “ultimate entertainer who could do it all”; an important inspiration for someone of Stan’s talents.
The standout single from Infatuated “Rewind” has received over one million streams on Spotify and the music video has been viewed over 100,000 times on Youtube. The EP itself gained traction among the biggest music sites including HotNewHipHop, Billboard and VIBE Magazine.
We recently had a chance to chat with the Chicago-based star following the release of his new hit single:
(ripple.) First, in an ideal world would you be an accomplished pop/R&B singer or the hardest rapper in the game?
(Stan Sono) Neither, to be honest. If I had to give you an answer, I would say I want to be a master of many fields. I’m a Singer/Songwriter/Producer and visual artist too. I’m about to show and prove to myself and everyone that I can build my brand to stand for just that. Not just one lane. Sono got the vision, got the focus.
Talk briefly about the work and time it’s taken to get to where you are now.
I think the culmination of my work will soon reflect in all my new releases. And the work never stops. Gotta keep evolving and keeping the mentality that you got more work to do. I think as a songwriter & producer I feel comfortable where I’m at. Nowadays I just set the focus on being the artist Stan Sono primarily and how to become better everyday.
You’ve stated previously (with VIBE) that your “spirit animal” artist equivalent is The Dream. With whom would be the ultimate comparison right now for you?
I am my own competition each and every day. I get inspiration from everywhere. But I have a new sound I will be bringing out, starting with Damelo that will really give you insight on what I mean.
Was Infatuated a full length feature or just a taste of what’s to come? In other words, is there an album in works?
Just a taste of what’s to come. I have albums worth of material… let’s just put it that way. But it’s a single driven market in 2017-18 Currently, I’m working on dropping bangerz aka more singles and videos back to back. I’m also working with artists from Florida and Chicago of course and got production and features coming as well. You will be seeing my name a lot on your TL.
“Rewind” has received over a million streams on Spotify. Was this expected? How does that make you feel?
Makes me feel like I am on the right track. I got a tattoo of the rewind logo off the cover to symbolize the 1 million plays in my life. It’s very dope. I wanna do it over and over again and bigger and better. Now that I set the bar like that for myself, need one of these next records to hit like 10 mill and then it’s on – it will happen.
Talk briefly about how you approach a new project or even just a song? What goes into that idea and then creating the sound?
It’s really about doing it in the moment. When you feel like you got something to say. Most times to get shit off your chest and to do it in the heat of the moment will make for the best music. Beat wise I like to start with chords. I don’t like too much shit in the beat. I’ll start laying vocals down right away. Freestyle then write off that and go from there. It’s inexpensive, because I record myself and edit it all so within 4 hours a banger will be done.
Who do you listen to in your down time?
Mainly myself and a lot of Future and Young Thug right mow. Oh and Latin music too, their melodies are insane like J. Balvin, Romeo Santos; them dudes got it. Vinylz and his camp are my favorite producers and Metro of course. I try to just work on my craft though.
You’ve just released a fire new single “Damelo”, can fans expect more coming soon?
Yes. So much more! Got a lot on the way. More songs like that. Cracking the code man.
Ultimately when people look back on your career what do you want them to remember you for?
That’s a good question. I don’t know yet. I just want people to respect my catalogue when it’s said and done. Working hard and earning my stripes to be one of the best in the industry of course is always the goal.
Finally, what are the goals for 2018
The goals for 2018 are to put out a lot of music and content, start doing shows, get placements, & get that big bag so that Sono can really go global with it.
